Ways to unblock your drain, quickly and efficiently

Ways to unblock your drain quickly and efficiently 1

There are several reasons why we suffer from blocked drains, either in the kitchen sink, basin or shower. The most common reasons for blocked drains are build up of hair or other debris getting washed down the pipes. Blocked drains can be a source of property damage and health problems for people and pets.

The early warning signs of a blocked drain are:

  • Bad smell
  • Gurgling sounds when water is running
  • Slow draining
  • Overflowing

To help you avoid a blocked pipe disaster, we look at three ways you can unblock your drain, quickly and efficiently:

  1. Use hot water – it is one of the simplest and most low-effort methods for removing grime from your pipes. All you need to do is run hot water for a length of time and this should remove low level grime build up in pipes.
  2. For more stubborn blockages, use baking soda and vinegar – take equal amounts of vinegar and baking soda (we recommend ⅓ cup each) and mix it well in boiling water. Once ready, pour it down the drain, wait 15 minutes and then pour hot water down the drain.
  3. Use a plunger – a fine plumbing helper for a clogged shower drain; it’s meant to force blockages of all kinds downward and out of drains. The process is simple: place the plunger so the cup covers the drain opening. Fill the shower basin or tub with enough water to cover the plunger’s rim, then rapidly push the plunger up and down for a few minutes to create suction and push the blockage through the drain. Finally, flush the drain with hot water.
